The Dirty Truth about Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoos often come in aerosol spray cans use a chemical propellant that sprays out of the can, onto your hair and into the air. This colourless, odourless gas is called LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and is made up of butane, propane and isobutane.
These gasses pose serious risks such as respiratory issues, headaches, hormone disruption, organ damage and not only cause long-term harm to the body, but are destructive to the environment and the earth, as well.
Several dry shampoos on the market contain talc, which is often contaminated with asbestos (a highly toxic mineral). While its oil-absorbing properties may seem life-changing, its side effects actually are. There are several health concerns surrounding the use of talc and can include skin irritations, organ system toxicity, respiratory distress and serious cancer risks.
A couple more chemicals consistently found in traditional dry shampoos are denatured alcohol (seen on labels as “alcohol denat.” and “fragrance”). Both of these toxic ingredients can be irritating to your scalp, damaging to your hair, and dangerous to your health.
